North South Corridor : Singapore Government acquires building to facilitate construction

Singapore: On 16 April 2021 in a joint media release by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) , Singapore Land Authority (SLA) and Building and Construction Authority (BCA), it was announced that the Singapore Government has decided to acquire and demolish 68-74 Thomson Road, a 4-storey building, before excavation works near the North South Corridor tunnel can commence.

An impact assessment study stated that the building’s foundation would need to be strengthened before the start of excavation works for the North South Corridor tunnel. However, as LTA’s tests indicated that the building’s concrete strength was lower than needed to safely carry out strengthening works, the Government decided that it would be impractical and risky to do so. Thus it was decided that acquisition and demolishment would proceed. Affected owners will have to hand over their units by July.

The North South Corridor will be Singapore’s first integrated transport corridor with continuous bus lands and at-grade cycling trunk routes to better serve public bus commuters, cyclists and pedestrians. The North South Corridor spans 21.5km and will directly connect the northern region of Singapore to its city centre. It will also facilitate more and newer developments in the northern region while relieving high traffic demand between the northern and southern regions of the island. This includes the Central Expressway, the Bukit Timah Expressway and major arterial roads like Thomson and Marymount Road. It was previously expected to be completed by 2026 however due to the COVID-19 pandemic, construction delays have pushed the completion back by a year. It is now anticipated to be completed in 2027.
